Jealousy and Desire in Ovids Metamorphoses Essay -- Ovid Metamorphose

Jealousy and Desire in Ovids Metamorphoses Passionate lust is a blinding force. When jealousy and desire control actions, the outcome is never what it is envisioned to be. Ovids Metamorphoses provides an clear example of love turned terribly wrong. Throughout the novel, overwhelming desire controls actions and emotions, leaving shadower buoy sadness and grief wherever it strikes. With this kind of love, nobody gets what he or she wants in the end. The first strong example of unsatisfactory endings can be appoint in Book Four, in the story of The Sun-god and Leucothoe. Phoebus has a strong desire for Leucothoe, and the two begin a fiery affair. Clytie, one of the girls whom Phoebus had rejected, is insanely green with envy, and snitches on Phoebus and Leucothoes affair. The outcome is disheartening Leucothoe is buried alive, Phoebus is grief-stricken, and Clytie still doesnt get the man she wanted. Everyone loses. And as for Clytie, / Love might have been a reason for her sorrow, / And sorrow for relation tales. . . Since she was so used to love, and close crazy / for lack of it, she pined away (Ovid 89). This exemplifies the blinding affect that love can take on people. If Clytie had taken time to depend out her actions, she would have seen what the outcome would have been like. If Phoebus didnt want her before he met Leucothoe, why would he want Clytie after she had taken his love away from him? in that respect was not logic in Clyties actions, only vehement love. One could argue that the love displayed in the novel is actually not love at all, plainly pure longing and lust. If the characters really felt love, they would think about the other person and want him or her ... ...Circes satisfaction that Picus would be with no other woman. She says, You shall be punished for this, you shall not be given / To Canens any more, and you will learn / What a woman, scorned in love, can do, that woman / Being Circe, love and sc orned (Ovid 350). People often do crazy things for those individuals they love or think they love. When desire and jealousy overpower the ability to think clearly, the consequences are almost always catastrophic. One could learn a lesson from these stories or just be amused with how closely it resembles something that has been seen or experienced recently. Either way, the ending is always the same, and everyone can relate to the feelings portrayed. Work Cited Ovid. Metamorphoses. The Norton Anthology of World Masterpieces. Ed. Braveheart Essay example -- essays research papers

It has been said that the best things in life are worth(predicate) fighting for. In the movie Braveheart starring Mel Gibson this thought is the basis for the whole movie. This film was based on the real life story of Scotlands rebellion from under face rule in the thirteenth century. William Wallace, played by Gibson, was a son of a common soldier. He desired nothing more in life than to move back to his homeland years after his fathers death and to start a farm and a family. Wallaces plans are drastically interrupted when the English lord of the land kills his wife in order to get to him. Instead of making him weak, the murder of his wife prompts William to begin a rebellion of English rule. He inspires thousands of Scotsmen to fight the English soldiers for their freedom. This movie is an incredible display of the ability of a country to fight against oppression from evil. Mel Gibson does a wonderful job playing a character who fights with passion for his country and for the me mory of his wife. It is uncommon to find a movie where the main character fights with as much feeling and emotion as William Wallace does. He is an intelligent man and would not have fought in a war unless it was for a meaningful cause. Before the death of his wife he is approached by some of the villagers to fight against the English but refuses to because he doesnt feel it is necessary.&n...

Achieve success in life Essay

Education is the best tool in order to achieve success in life. This is the fundamental factor that determines ones place in a very dynamic society. As an educator, my sole purpose is to ensure that students obtain a high-quality academic and social training that would equip them with the necessary knowledge and experiences to be well-prepared for the real world. Given this responsibility, I am determined to do everything that I dismiss to make sure that my students reach their goals and objectives in life.Since one of my students is having some difficulty in combining his/her studies with work, I would try to help by alleviating the burdens of that student. First, I would rent a one-on-one talk with him/her to determine the problems. It was mentioned that this student is a scholar and he/she must acquire a C average for the class to be able to keep his/ her scholarship. This student has no other option but to do better in class. But this does not mean that there is besides a glimm er of hope because as a teacher I can maker some minor adjustments in order for the student to enthral up in class. Some of the things that I would do are to extend deadlines, provide extra projects to pull up her average and utilize different technologies so that students can submit their outputs anytime and anywhere.

Religion, Politics and Economy

Through the analysis of archaeological evidence and sources, historians are now able to gain insight into how nightspot functi superstard in Pompeii and Herculaneum. Though several factors made up these societies, this essay will only examine trio religion local government activity and economy to take in a picture of how society was. The citizens of Pompeii and Herculaneum were very religious and believed everything in their lives was controlled by the gods. We can come upon the importance placed on religion from the ten temples in the area, some of which are the Temple Of Jupiter (Capitolium) and the Temple of Apollo. To be a secure Roman pietas, reverence of the gods was required and was an integral part of the persona of any respected Roman. They adore many gods, primarily Graeco-Roman deities such as Mars (Aries) and Venus (Aphrodite). The temples had two functions to house images and objects associated with the god and to be a place where rituals were carried go forth b y priests to honour the gods. They were simply built and contained a statue of the deity which stood before an alter where an offering could be made. The Temple of Apollo on the left and the Temple of Jupiter on the decline Gods were orshipped both in public and in the al-Qaeda. Cicero states The most sacred, the most hallowed place on earth is the home of each and every citizen. There are his sacred hearth and his household gods, there the very centre of his worship, religion and domestic ritual. Most houses had small shrines called Lararia with small statues or painted images of the Lares (household gods who protect the home and family) or other household gods such as Vesta, the goddess of the hearth and Panates, guardian of the pantry. Some houses had images of a genius who was the spirit of the paterfamilias (master of the house). Lararium in the House of the Vetti, showing the temper between two Lares Statuettes of Lares in House of the Golden Cupid With the spread of the R oman Empire came new foreign religions and cults which were generally tolerated. The Egyptian cult of Isis became popular and appealed especially to the poor and oppressed thanks to the promise of immortality and rebirth. After the earthquake of 62 A.D, the temple of Isis was rebuilt the most elaborately showing how much she was valued. Images of Isis and other Egyptian deities could in like manner be found in homes. Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility and divine intoxication, was worshipped under the ame of Bacchus. A fresco found in the Villa of the Mysteries depicts him initiating members into his secret society. The worship of Mithras that originated is Persia was also common. The Temple of Isis The imperial cult transcended all other cults and the emperor offered every citizen the opportunity of worshipping him.Worship of the emperor was the most important as we can see through the Temple of Vespasian, the temple of Fortuna Augusta which housed a statue of Augustus and the fo rum which celebrated the imperial glory through triumphal arches and statues. Altar at the temple of Vespasian ocal politics is shown by the number of political buildings in the forum including the Comitium (voting hall), Basilica, which was originally a law court but morphed into a meeting place for businessmen and politicians, and the three government offices. The electorate consisted of two Duumviri elective each year who has potestas (official power) and the responsibility to oversee revenues and taxation, preside over the town council and perform Judicial roles in court, two Aediles elected each year who were responsible for the care of temples, streets and public buildings and the olding of games, two Duumviri Quinqennales were chosen every five years which performed the same tasks as the Duumviri in addition to rewrite the citizenship and council roles, and a Prafectus lure Dicundo, who only had power in an emergency. There were various roles that were not accompanied by offi cial political power but were still important. be a member of the town council (curia), which consisted of eighty to one hundred members, was one such role. The members had mould within the community and needed dignitas and respect from other members before being appointed. A Roman with political ambitions would need to be a free, wealthy man who was driven, had a reputable family or made a good name for himself, absorb menageificant dignitas and auctoritas and have connections with those in higher ranking positions.Patrons assisted clients who sought political advancement in return for support in the election campaign. Women did not have the right to vote and werent allowed to run for any of the political positions but despite these restrictions women could still have a large influence in society as they had borrowed auctoritas from the men in their family. Studies conducted by Frances Bernstein of the University of Maryland revealed that at least seventeen of the electoral not ices show women who, with their husbands, were clients of candidates for office. On the wall of a Pompeian house, one Lollia, With her people, most probably her family, urged the election of Gaius Julius Polybius as duumvir, one of the chief magistrates. Most of the evidence for politics comes from inscriptions, graffiti and painted notices. Two thousand of these in Pompeii have been classified as electoral notices announcing support for a candidate and calling on the reader to vote for him. An object lesson of this is If upright living is considered any recommendation, Lucretius Fronto is easily worthy of office and Note for Lucious Popidius Sabinus his grandmother worked hard for his last election. The Amphitheatre at Pompeii is inscribed with a plaque stating the duumviri paid for it as a gift to the citizens and the statue of Marcus Balbus and memorial alter in the baths at Herculaneum suggest he funded the baths. The economies of Pompeii and Herculaneum were small and local, ye t diverse and successful due to their prime location on the sea and as Strabo recounted surrounded by the fertile volcanic soils of Mount Vesuvius. A mosaic discovered in the House of Scaurus with the words Profit is my delight shows that they had enthusiasm for money making. The economies functioned by the circulation of money through businesses such as pistrina (bakeries), cauponae/taberna (inns/taverns), thermopolia (hot food bars) and fullonica (laundries). Jongman stated that agricultural production was the largest contribution to the economy. Trade was vital to fix an income and to help the diverse economy dredgeish. Most of Pompeian imports and exports are deciphered through pottery. The analysis of these sources show that they imported Egypt and furniture from Naples. Evidence of exports comes from garum Jars found in France and fuddle amphorae in France, Spain, Germany and Africa.Jongman (2009) argues that fullonicas werent a significant industry but contradictory to t his Seneca indicates that 600 sheep died in the earthquake and 18 fullonicas were discovered including the House of the Wooden Partician in Herculaneum where a raiment press was found and the Guild of fullers in the Eumachia building. The fulleries were the clothes makers and cleaners of society and they performed multiple tasks including he processing of wool and the washing, cleaning, rinsing, dying and brushing of cloth. The Pompeian workshop sign of M.Vecilus Verecundus showed the process involved which included the washing of the wool in a combination of what was called fullers earth which consisted of earth, potash, carbonate of soda and water supply, which was then trodden on by slaves and hung out to dry. One of the largest fullonicas found was the famous Fullery of Stephanus which was installed in a dwelling on the Via dellAbbondanza. At the entrance was a machine for pressing tunics, a basin in the atrium and a previous peristyle now containing more basins for the dying rocess.Pots were placed outside the fullonicas and on street corners to collect urine from passer byes as the preferred camel urine was a luxury and costly item. In Pompeii and Herculaneum clothing represented status and keeping clothes clean was necessary to be presentable and maintain that status. everyplace thirty bakeries have been identified in Pompeii with ovens heated with vine branches. Bread was popular because most homes didnt have ovens and it wasnt expensive. Bakeries grinded grain on lava stone mills which would press it into flour. The flour was then mixed with water and set on tables for kneading.A mule or onkey turned the mill as we can see from donkey skeletons found in the mills of Herculaneum. Bread was usually sent to be sold in shops but not always as some bakeries had connecting shops and sold their own bread. An example of this is N. Popidius Priscus, who used his freedmen to run the Bakery of Modestus in which 81 loaves of bread were found from the day of th e eruption. This bakery shows the economic connections between ex-slaves and the upper classes. Twenty five divergent pans were discovered at Sextus Patulcus Felixs shop in Herculaneum which provides evidence that a variety of cakes and breads were on offer.

Classroom Environment Management Essay

Designing a class mode where the environment is safe for the students and those providers who will be workings with him or her will have adequate space, flexibility of surroundings, safety, and ease of access and mobility for both the students and providers is essential. The schoolroom environment for those students identified with learning, emotional and behavioral disabilities fosters positive educational and social growth by providing individual atomic number 18as for students as well as establishing sm on the whole assort areas in an inviting environment.Attention to all styles of learning is sufficiently intercommunicate through the uses of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic stimuli. In this reflection, an appropriate classroom environment plan will be highlighted relating to students with learning, emotional and behavioral disabilities in a high give instruction setting and will be accompanied by a visual diagram of the actual set-up of our classroom through a graphic repr esentation of the classroom attached as Appendix A.In order to establish a desirable classroom design for students with learning, emotional and behavioral disabilities (Kauffman, 2005), one of the first considerations would be to allow spaces for structured and non structured individual and small group instruction and activities Students need personal space to work independently with staff in a one-on-one setting, specifically if they are non cooperating, are hyperactive, are displaying limited self-control, or simply need to be alone for a brief purpose of time .In addition to providing for individual stations, several round tables are necessary which allow for small group interaction, thus, creating a comprehend of community and collaboration, are included in the classroom (Bos & Vaughn, 2006, p. 462-463). Moreover, the classroom should reflect an open floor concept through allowing adequate space between the individual and small group stations. Two round tables are located on one side of the room with three individual work stations on the other.Bookshelves (mounted to the wall) containing clearly designate multiple resources are located on one end of the classroom. Separate bowls of stress relieving balls are placed on the tables and desks. These stress balls are especially useful when students are frustrated or having difficulty focusing his or her attention. Emergency exits are well-marked with evacuation and emergency procedures, next to classroom rules and expectations. schoolroom exits are visually marked and all students are trained on emergency evacuation procedures, promoting safety and security in the classroom.Loose materials, such as scissors, rules, pens, pencils, markers and other instruments are located in support staff desks. The classroom environment is well-lit with both artificial energy efficient lighting and abundant subjective lighting, and has large windows so the students evict view the outdoors (U. S. Department of Energy, 200 8). The lower halves of all windows are covered with bright paper so students will not be distracted by the outdoors (e. g. , people walking by, cars passing by), leaving the top half of the windows uncovered which allows for the sunlight to still come through. The ingrained lighting in the room is exhilarating when reflecting off the walls, which at times engages students to speak about weather and nature, promoting a welcoming learning environment. The atmosphere of the room is homey and welcoming and the walls are brightly painted and decorated with inspirationally themed posters throughout. Student work is displayed throughout the classroom, further enhancing the room and contributing to a sense of community and family. Background low volume music of various types is played to stimulate the environment.Technology is an effective and essential tool for delivering instruction and must be integrated into the classroom (Bos & Vaughn, 2006, p. 462-463). Computers are located on the i ndividual desks throughout the room. Students all have unique ways of learning, some visually, some tactilely, and some auditorally. given over that an environment should be conducive to all types of learners, all of the above must be incorporated into classroom environment plan. Lastly, proper ventilation in a classroom is important.Temperatures that are too hot or too cold are not productive to student learning and performance and can give in or contribute to an increase in undesired behaviors or attitudes (U. S. Department of Energy, 2008). Students will become distracted by changes in the classroom and, as such, thoughtful monitoring of the classroom temperature is required. Having windows in the classroom allows the students and staff to enjoy the fresh air outside, which again can promote discussion about nature, weather and the environment.Classrooms can be modified according to the specific disability being served regardless of the populations limitations. An environment that is safe for the students and for those working with students is essential. Appropriately arranging the classroom to meet the specific needs of the students with whom one works is important. Properly defining small group areas, individual stations, a conducive, welcoming environment, with integrated technology, will all be beneficial to meet the needs of all students. This paper outlines a classroom environment for students with learning, emotional and behavioral disabilities.

Anomie Theory

Right off the bat when look ating the article it states that its the most widely read article in sociology. The author Robert K. Merton opens his paper by outgrowth ch in allenging certain offenses that were popular in 1938. Most of the theories that Merton has analyzed menti unrivaledd biological drives. Some of the theorists visual modality offensive activity as biological drives in which our federation descends to terms with restraining it.What I found interesting, Merton doesnt agree with other theorists, he, on the other hand, argues that a person or persons drive for curse is frequently shown to be stemmed from hostelry itself. This is when his theory or argument splits into two parts. The article refers to his anomie theory. This hypothesis of his is looked to be explained why certain parts of societies deem increased order of criminal activity than lets say, the other half of the societies in which they appear to have decreased rates of criminal activity. Merton focu ses on the relative emphasis placed on this set heathenish refinements society has placed as well as the innovationalized norms for achieving these goals of society. It is come to know more or less certain places in society have a high comparative prominence which is called ethnical goals. Also, to have a low jibe value of the norms or as well some gain the light uponment of goals, which increases the rate of crimes. Merton characterizes these societies by using the terms anomie or normlessness, whereas it is explained from the goal-seeking demeanour, Merton mentions. An case-by-case is receptive to little commands or in other words law. This turns into a repercussion for persons employing the most beneficial values including that of criminal acts in order to achieve their once again prize. The strain theory Merton discusses in this half of the article argues that some person and persons within a society are being exposed to special pressures that of criminal actions. Merton mentions that while it is urged as well as expected that people strive for financial riches, people of the get down contour are prevented from achieving this goal. This leads to individuals to have pressure, but even then they can adapt to the strain or so-called pressures of values.Continuing of Merton briefly discusses why some types of individuals are more in all likelihood to respond to strain with crime than others. Mertons strain theory has been the egress of extensive commentary and researches the evidence for his strain theory which is mixed. Certain recent tests of this theory be to be at its accurate as well as the anomie theory. The anomie theory proposes that criminal activity is most seen in those who place often emphasis on cultural goals and little on the norms for achieving the goals, meaning to be successful. Before going into the article I made a note that has caught my attention nigh the author itself. Albert K. Cohen was a student of Robert K. Merton. I j ust found this to be truly intriguing because some of his points or theories have been taken into composition in Cohens articles. Cohen has a particular interest and focus of criminal societies. To narrow it down, Cohen focuses more on the lower-working-class urban gangs of 1950, during that time they were the subject of attention. Cohen in the article poses a question of How can we explain the origin and content of delinquent subcultures? Since he was a student of Merton as I said before he draws some of Mertons theory to provide his own, collective answer to the question which is often outlined end-to-end the article. In the first part of his theory, that is being stated in the first section of the article. Cohen provides a well-explained origin of deviant genial groups. The second section applies that the theory to explain the origin and contents of man it has to be specified by gender. Cohen focuses on working-class males and urban gangs. While I was reading the parts of the a rticle, I have noted and made some comparisons and contrasts with Mertons strain theory.Similar to Merton, Cohen argues that goal blockade is what causes delinquency. Now Cohen, on the other hand, argues that lower and working class males dont concern themselves with the goal of cultural goals. Other than the obvious of not concerning themselves with achieving this success, they would rather concern themselves with the fulfillment of making it to the higher societal class. The achievement of broader goals referred to the respect from the higher-ups in the financial success aspect of cultural goals. This was noted by Cohen to be decisive because of the difference in goals. It is said in the article that an individual can obtain financial riches through illegal activities such as theft, this is one of Mertons adaptations of innovation. An individual cant steal the status of a higher class, which makes perfect sense since it could lead to a huge consequence, which Cohen discusses throu ghout the article. The consequence is that the lower and working class often have to evolve to the goal blockade by making an alternative plan. This is how someone, an individual would gain their true success. This is also noted to be very much alike to Mertons adaptations of criminal behavior, in which was explained that these new goals and methods are basically being replaced for the previous goals instead of the new. From reading onward I made the familiarity that both the lower and working class share hostility towards the affectionateness-class persons. The hostility leads them to set up a status quo that values everything that the apparent middle class doesnt concern itself with. base on these very theories it is explained that the middle class values private property and respect for an individual. Now, this caught my attention because it made me question his theory. Its suggesting that lower and working class boys dont value such things. Also, in the theory, it gives an arch etype of what I was questioning. The example that was given was that while gangs of some sorts value the destruction and theft of either property probably more towards private property and leading more towards aggression towards others. Cohen then goes onto the explanatory origins and contents of the criminal social group. After acquire towards the end of the article it states the definite features of his hypothesis.Theorists have come to the main claim that the goals of criminal persons are not disagreeable to an idea of standard goals as Cohen has explained throughout his theory. Even though there has been a criticism the data shows and tends to often prove and support this argument. All of this information that was given by this theorist Cohen brings a fundamental contribution to criminal law.Anomie TheoryAnomie theory is important for explaining whether crime is a normal or abnormal (pathological) social phenomenon (Cartwright, 2011). It describes a lack of social norms, lawle ssness and normlessness (Cartwright, 2013). In detail, it is a breakdown of social bonds between an individual and the community. This theory was first coined by Emile Durkheim, a French sociologist in his book Suicide published in 1897 (Cartwright, 2013). Later on, Robert Merton, the President of American Sociological Association, highly-developed the link between anomie and social structure.Unlike Durkheim, Merton apply the notion from Durkheims anomie theory and explains that social structure could exert pressure on an individual and directly cause deviance (Cartwright, 2011). This theory is break in known as the Anomie-Strain Theory. Furthermore, in 1994, Steven Messner and Richard Rosenfeld, like Merton, brought more attention to social organization and social institutions instead of focusing on individuals when analysing crimes (Cartwright, 2011), so the Institutional-Anomie Theory was developed. In order to understand the anomie theory better, the developments of this theory from Emile Durkheim to Steven Messner and Richard Rosenfeld should all be considered. For Emile Durkheim, his main concern near anomie was social solidarity (Cartwright, 2011). Based on this concern, he divided solidarity into two categories mechanical solidarity, which maintains low adaptation skills and to the contrary, organic solidarity whose inertia sensitively invites changes (Cartwright, 2013). Durkheim observed that these two groups would co-exist.The reason is that anomie is impossible when solidarity is organic. Their sensitiveness to change leads to evolution among this form of labour. Later in 1897, Durkheim pointed out that the suicide rates were due to the dramatic economic changes, such as economic economic crisis and the sudden growth of the economy (Cartwright, 2011). According to Durkheim, these periods of anomie times of normlessness, lawlessness, and unregulated choice made individuals more susceptible to committing suicide or engaging in deviant behaviour (Cartwright, 2011, p. ). In this study, Durkheim associated anomie with the influence of a lack of the norms. In Durkheims study of anomie theory, two notions should not be neglected. Firstly, Emile Durkheim referred to society much like a functioning organism (Cartwright, 2011), evidence for the theory can be easily found in his referring to the society as the social organism or the functions of the central organ (Cartwright, 2011, p. 6). In order to maintain the continuation of the organism, each of the integrated parts has to be working well.Secondly, Durkheim discussed crime as an abnormal activity, which indicates that a certain proportion of crimes are normal and happens in most societies, (Cartwright, 2011). f in the steps of Durkheims study, Robert Merton described more about the relationship between social structure and anomie theory, later known as the anomie-strain theory. The definition of the word strain in the verb form means to subject to tension or stress. This meani ng is very similar to the strain theory. The theory indicates that the social structure of a society may pressure or fight the citizens to commit crimes, due to the failure to provide many individuals with the conventional means necessary to realize those culture goals, which also means that the individual lacks access to cultural goals, such as money, job, or education (Merton, 1938). In Mertons publication Social Structure and Anomie, he provides a good example that explains his theory. For example, in the USA, the societys general goal is wealth therefore, in order to achieve this certain goal, the institutionalized manner is to be hard-working or obtaining education (Merton, 1938). Based on this theory, Merton identifies five modes of adaptation, including conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism and rebellion (as cited in Cartwright, 2011, p. 21). According to Merton, innovators are most likely to engage in criminal behaviour, since they may accept the recognition of certai n cultural goals but reject achieving the goals in a legitimate way (Merton, 1938).This illegitimacy adjustment as the major concern involves two features (Merton, 1938). Firstly, such antisocial behavior by certain conventional values of the culture and by the class structure involving differential access to the approved opportunities for legitimate, prestige-bearing pursuit of the culture goal (Merton, 1938, p. 27). Secondly, it is the precondition of equal significance. Because of the limitation of legitimate effort, for those individuals with formal education and few economic resources, success is hard to get (Merton, 1938).In addition, Merton declared that the theory he examine was incomplete, since various structural elements were neglected for example, the relevance of cultural conflict for an analysis of culture-goal and institutional-means malintegration has not yet been examined, and the social function performed by illicit responses has also been omitted (Merton, 1938, p. 30). As for Steven Messner and Richard Rosenfeld (1995), their study, known as the institutional-anomie theory, centre more on how criminal behavior is affected institutionally, such as by schools, churchs or companies.Messner and Rosenfeld declared that criminology has overly focused on analyzing the behavior of individuals, such as mental illness, but paid less attention on how social organization and institutions influence the behaviour (Rosenfeld & Messner, 1995). Based on the comparison chart that Messner and Rosenfeld established in Crime and the American Dream an Institutional Analysis, the statistic shows that the United States of America has the highest rates of robbery or homicide among a number of countries (Messner & Rosenfeld, 1995).The reason is due to the crime causing nature of American-style capitalism and its unique cultural goals or aspiration (Cartwright, 2011, p. 52). Messner and Rosenfield are also concerned about the normal functions of social institutions . The definition of institutions means relatively stable sets of norms and values, statuses and roles, and groups and organizations (Messner & Rosenfeld, 1995, p, 60). At this point, Messner and Rosenfeld introduced four major social institutions political system or polity, economy, institution of family and institution of education (Messner & Rosenfeld, 1995).Even though these four institutions may not seem directly relevant to crime however, according to Messner and Rosenfeld, in order to analyse the crime in the United States, the interconnection between these four institutions are central (Messner & Rosenfeld, 1995). In this study, Messner and Rosenfeld (1995) also talked about the institutional balance of power. Due to the monetary need of every cooperation and institution, the economy has come to dominate the other ternary institutions (Cartwright, 2011, p52).The devaluation of the economy has overcome the other three major institutions. At last, the dominance of the economy has developed to a very extreme level, and the monetary goals bring out the term the ends justify the means (Cartwright, 2011, p, 52). As the development of anomie theory, from Emile Durkheim to Robert Merton to Messner and Rosenfeld, is discussed, the elements that tie these together is that they all try to figure out the reasons that cause criminal behavior and examines as to why crime happens. This also counts as a similarity between the three anomie theories. In the article Cheap Capitalism written by Hongming Cheng, he characterized rubbishy capitalism by low prices, inferior quality and serious condition of goods or services to maximize profits (Cheng, 2012, p, 254). Cheng also pointed out that the cheap capitalism is facilitated by cheap labour and raw materials and, more importantly, associated with degenerate moralisticity in the business world (Cheng, 2012, p, 254).In my opinion, the article provides a good example of and explanation for crime in the non-capitalist coun tries, such as China. Cheng gives an example about food crime, which involves rampant institutions using cheap and dangerous industrial chemicals in foods (Cheng, 2012). unmatched explanation will be that the food industries provides low-quality food to cheap labourers, since the poor working class cannot afford buying expensive but healthy food (Cheng, 2012).The case is related to the institutional-anomie theory studied by Messner and Rosenfeld (1995). One way to cause crime could be due to the social structure and social institutions. In the article, Cheng also provides a table of scales from 1 (not very important) to 4 (very important) that describes the factors that may lead to and influence the food crime. It turns out that social culture, moral and values got rated 3. 8 out of 4, followed by lack of adequate enforcement that got 3. 6 (Cheng, 2012).From this table, it shows that moral anomie is a major factor that associated with food crime (Cheng, 2012, p, 265). From my persp ective, the institutional-anomie theory is connected to this case the most. In conclusion, the development of anomie theory, from Emile Durkheim to Messner and Rosenfeld, provides brilliant ideas and thoughts that explain crime thoroughly. The evidence that supports their theory is solid and valid. Based on this, it makes the theory complete and reasonable.

PG&E is a powerful billion dollar company they are the giants in the industry that will trample on any 1 who dares to cross with them, having gold and powers are the evils of being shown. So from the start PG&E already deceive the community of Hinckley, California into giving false information and mislead them by their dishonesty. This restructuring as well impacted net shekels, as Pinnacle had to pay $51 million in after-tax charges and was left with $53 million in net earnings. in spite of these charges, this net income shows a st rong recovery from 2011 when the company suffered a net loss of $47 million. quantity capital expenditures were $78 million in 2012, devour from $117 million in 2011. These expenditures include footprint consolidation. A summary of these figures can be seen below in designate 1.Exhibit 1 Pinnacle Financial Statements It can be seen in Exhibit 1 that Pinnacle has a substantial essence of acquisition, merger and other restructuring charges. These charges are primarily related to Pinnacle closing facilities in Washington, New York, Wisconsin, and Delaware. A complete segmentation of these expenditures has been included in exhibit 2. Exhibit 2 Acquisition, merger, and other restructuring charges One of the problems that Pinnacle currently faces is their wide amount of debt. They have roughly $550 million of a term lend that is due in 2014.This resulted in Pinnacle entering the market with a $300 million incremental term loan last year, dubbed F, with proceeds to be used to help r epay the $550 million. Pinnacle has an additional $400 million E term loan that was syndicated earlier in 2012. This loan matures in October 2018 and is covered by a one hundred one soft call premium until April 17, 2013. Proceeds from that deal were used to issue $199 million in 10. 625% subordinated notes due in 2017. Altogether Pinnacle has about $641 million outstanding under the extended term loan due in 2016 (Bisbey, 2012).This is one of the primary reasons for Pinnacles IPO, as will be discussed later on in the report. The rest period sheet below summarizes Pinnacles debt obligations as well as their assets and equity. Exhibit 3 Pinnacles Balance Sheet for 2011 and 2012 After performing a two-finger analysis of this balance sheet it can be concluded that Pinnacle has not made any drastic changes over the past two years. Assets have decreased slightly but that was coupled with a decrease in liabilities by roughly the same amount which is reasonable.Exhibit 4 is a portion of Pinnacles hard currency flow statement that helps explain these changes in the balance sheet. Pinnacles cash flows from financing increased 212% between 2011 and 2012, the vast majority of this expenditure being the repayment of debt. By making a arrive of loan repayments, Pinnacle decreased their cash and thitherfore their assets, while withal reducing their liabilities. Exhibit 4 Cash Flows from Financing Activities Ratio 2012 2011 Return on Equity 5. 9% -5. 54% Return on Assets 1. 19% -1. 05% Return on Sales 11. 46% 7. 4% Current Ratio 2. 11 2. 17Quick Ratio 1. 04 1. 17 Debt-to-Equity Ratio 3. 95 4. 26 Exhibit 5 2012 Ratio compendium of Pinnacle Group Inc. These ratios IPO The food-industry sector is changing due to increased globalization, vertical integration, and mergers and acquisitions. This is forcing many firms to look to alternatives to debt financing in order to keep up with the competition. The public equity market is a valuable option in financing the growth necessary to survive amongst competitors, as it offers access to more equity capital than could be attained from other sources (Stegelin & Houston, 2007).With millions of dollars in debt obligations coming up due in the future(a) few years, it is understandable that Pinnacle is having an Initial Public Offering to raise capital. This follows suit with research that has shown that as a food-industry firms leverage ratio increases, the likelihood of an IPO increases as well (Stegelin & Houston, 2007). It has also been noted that the probability of a food-industry firm IPO decreases with the firms size and age (Stegelin & Houston, 2007). Pinnacle is currently 15 years old which is incredibly young compared to industry leaders Kraft and Kellogg which are both over 100 years old. This could be a contributing factor to why they are wanting to go public. This IPO will follow 13 other offerings in 2013 backed by financial sponsors such as private-equity firms. These 13 other offerings can be used to loosely auspicate the achiever of Pinnacles IPO, as Pinnacle is backed by private-equity firm Blackstone. These IPOs were successful, seeing an clean first-day hand of 22% and are up an average of 21% from their listing dates. These results are promising in comparison to 30 other IPOs at large, showing an average 15% first-day gain and a gain of 19% from the listing dates (Driscoll, M. 2013). Another important benchmark is the IPOs of other food sellers. There were mixed results regarding the success of food seller IPOs in 2012. The health food sector showed strength with natural food companies Annies Inc. , Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage Inc. , and WhiteWave Foods Co. performing well since their IPOs. Annies shares have more than doubled since being listed last March while the value of Natural Grocers has risen over 40% since their listing in July (Driscoll, M. , 2013). On the other hand, Roundys Inc. and Amira Nature Foods Ltd. have underperformed since their IP Os.Roundys is a Midwestern supermarket chain and Amira is a rice seller, both of which are down about 20% from their offerings in October and February respectively (Driscoll, M. , 2013). Since Pinnacle offers processed, box foods, benchmarking their success from the natural, organic food IPOs is not very reliable. With people becoming more and more health conscious these days, it is not surprising that these health food companies found success in their IPOs. Although Pinnacle does incline the frozen vegetable brand Birdseye, they also carry a number of brands that would not be classified ad as healthy.Of the aforementioned companies, the most reliable comparison for Pinnacle would likely be with Roundys, the supermarket chain. Supermarkets sell a wide variety of processed and pre-packaged foods, and are the medium through which Pinnacles brands are sold. However, there is still not a strong correlation between the two firms. On March 27th, 2013, Pinnacle announced their Initial Pub lic Offering of 29,000,000 shares of common stock at $20 per share. Pinnacle also granted the underwriters a 30-day option to purchase an additional 4,350,000 shares at the IPO price. It is estimated that Pinnacle will raise net proceeds of about $545. 2 million after subtracting underwriting costs. Pinnacle plans to use the entirety of these earnings to pay off some of their debt. They plan to redeem $465 million in aggregate principal amount of 9. 25% Senior Notes due in 2015 at a redemption price of 100%. The residual of their IPO proceeds, along with some cash on hand, will be used to repay $119 million of the senior secured term loan B facility maturing in April 2014. IPO Success Pinnacle Foods had a very successful IPO on March 28, 2013.The company issued a total of 33,350,000 shares of common stock, including the entirety of the additional 4,350,000 shares that the underwriters had the option to purchase. Pinnacle now has a total of 117. 2 million common shares outstanding. Net of all underwriting discounts, Pinnacle raised $627 million through this offering, which is $81. 8 million more than they had initially anticipated. Pinnacle will couple this money with $40 million of cash on hand to pay down $667 million in outstanding debt. Instead of their initial plans of repaying $119 million of their term loan B due next April, they will repay $202 million.Exhibit 6 Pinnacle Foods Stock Performance Since IPO as Compared to S&P vitamin D As can be seen in Exhibit 6, Pinnacle shares (blue line) seem to be experiencing steady growth since their IPO on March 28, 2013. This is especially positive since the S&P 500 (brown line) seems to be doing quite the opposite. Pinnacle shares have increased from their low of $22. 15 to a high of $24. 61, an 11% increase.
